6 Days Marangu Route

DAY 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

  • Habitat: Rain Forest

Transport will be provided from your hotel in Moshi toward Marangu Gate, where we’ll finalize necessary formalities prior to our trek. Our hiking path starts by ascending magnificent tropical rainforest, in which final portion you might see blue monkeys. From the forest the trail expands to reveal stunning hillsides until we enter Mandara hut camp.

DAY 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

  • Distance: 12 km/7 miles
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Heath

Our day starts as we continue through the forest, until the trail widens into high moorland. If the weather is clear, we might catch first glimps of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks – two of the three volcanic combs that make up the summit of Kilimanjaro.

DAY 3: Horombo Hut to Mawenzi Ridge to Horombo Hut

This is an extra day reserved for your acclimatization, and you can use it for hiking on Mawenzi Ridge. This one of a kind scenery provides very motivating views of Kibo and Mawenzi. After spending some time in exploring the ridge, we will head back to Horombo Hut.

DAY 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

  • Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 15,430 ft
  • Distance: 10 km/6 miles
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Slowly but surely we will climb up and cross the lunar desert of the “Saddle”, situated between Kibo and Mawenzi. Kibo Hut camp is located at the base of Kibo crater wall, and here we’ll rest and enjoy early dinner and prepare for the summit day.

DAY 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

  • Distance: 6 km/4 miles
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic

  • Distance: 16 km/10 miles
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Heath

You will get up very early, around midnight, followed by the summit attempt. This portion of the hike is the most mentally and physically challenging, because the temperatures and the winds at this elevation can be severe. We’ll continue to ascend while still dark for several hours, but you will also have short but frequent breaks. Close to Stella Point (18,900ft) you will be able to enjoy the sunrise coming over Mawenzi peak, like of which you will not find anywhere else. From here, we’ll finally reach Uhuru Peak – the Roof of Africa and the highest point on Kilimanjaro and all of Africa.

After a short time at the summit, you will begin descend on the steep scree trail to Horombo Hut. You will enjoy your last dinner on the mountain, followed by well deserved sleep.

DAY 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Distance: 20 km/12 miles
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Rain Forest

The last day on the mountain will mostly be descend through tropical rainforest. In the park headquarters at Marangu gate you we collect your summit certificates, and vehicle will meet you here to take you back to your hotel in Moshi where you can shower and rest.[/vc_column_text]
